Swinging Into Teamwork – Our Day at Port Lympne Zoo

At Higher Elevation, we believe in lifting people—and each other—in more ways than one. That’s why our team of stairlift and mobility specialists took a well-earned break from the tools and showrooms to enjoy a day of team building in Kent, hosted by the amazing crew at Team Building with BITE.

Set at the stunning Port Lympne Zoo, our team day was centred around building enrichment toys for the zoo’s charismatic orangutans—turning nuts, bolts, and mesh into stimulating puzzles for these highly intelligent primates. Not your average stairlift service day!

Hands-On Creativity Meets Conservation

With expert guidance from Mark Kingston Jones and the TBWB team, we got stuck into designing and constructing interactive feeders to promote natural behaviours in the orangutans. This unique team building workshop saw our staff—usually focused on stairlift installations, home lifts and mobility products—getting hands-on with drills and mesh panels instead.

The aim? To create puzzles that would challenge the orangutans mentally and physically. From shaking methods to tool-based problem solving, our final designs encouraged creativity from the apes themselves!

A Real-World Test (and Real-World Results!)

After installing the feeders and loading them with walnuts, the orangutans were given access—and we were thrilled to see our work put to use immediately. The older male used sticks with incredible precision to fish out the treats, while his younger sibling adopted a shake-and-roll technique to release the goodies.

Not only was it a roaring success with the keepers, but it was also an unforgettable moment for our team. The perfect blend of fun, learning, and giving back.
